King of Adhesives

Interesting weekend for Memorial! Headed to the Rivah and poor Andy proceeded to have the worst luck I've ever seen.  Sliced foot, hooked finger, dented corn-hole board, day in the ER :(  But on the bright side we all learned a valuable lesson from the weekend........ Duct tape is the KING of all adhesives.

I know I know everyone has been saying for years the usefulness of this tape of wonder, but who is to believe it until they have first hand experience.  So what may you ask was the first hand experience:

1. It fixed a 35 year old holey sail.  The man being a master of all things mechanical (or should I say bachelor of science in all things mechanical engineering?) dragged out an ancient hobbie cat and actually got it to work with the help of duct tape of course.
 2.  It created a waterproof/ sand-proof barrier for poor Andy and his stitched up gash on the bottom of his foot.  Oyster shells are no joke.  He has participated in MMA fights and said shots of lidocaine in his wound is the worst pain he's ever felt. Ouch.  But at least as a consolation prize he received his very own afghan from Grandma Hicks!!

It is now officially summer...... HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!!

Getting Unplugged

So I finally took the plunge and disconnected my cable!! I don't know why I didn't do this forever ago... I never watch tv and if I do it's a movie, which my bf has so graciously put onto my external hard drive... So with that $100+ dollars in my pocket each month... I can really use it to start saving for a scuba trip once I'm certified in a few weeks!!

If going without tv means I get to see this beautiful place first hand, I say what the hey!

Just makes you think... what else can YOU do to simplify your life to make room for greater rewards and adventures!  Don't get stuck on the couch every moment of your free time, get out enjoy natural beauty. :)

Made with Love

So every weekend the boyfriend & I make the BEST blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup of course.  Just thought I would share the recipe, since they are pretty much a staple of our weekend now & are the best ones I've had! YUMM  This recipe makes 8 servings but we usually half it for 2 people.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cartons of blueberries

  1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth. Stir in blueberries.
  2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat.  (We use 350 on the griddle) Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

And don't forget to add the special ingredient... LOVE!!  Sorry had to say it, super cheesy :P

Ever hear someone say "everything happens for a reason" and just wonder if the person just ran out of words of encouragement or pulled the most appropriate cliche saying they could find out of their head... well I'm sure that is true part of the time, but over the last couple of weeks I've been shown that yes, you do go through things for a reason.

A person who shall not be named is/ was going through a very similar relationship problem I had a long time ago. She had every reason to let go but couldn't take the last step without talking it out and having someone understand her every emotion and reasoning. She just didn't know how to let go. That morning she prayed for God to show her how to let go... and that afternoon she talked with me. I was able to empathize and help her figure out the best way to let go. It seems simple stated like that, but making that final step of completely putting someone out of your life you thought you knew and loved is difficult. As I was reminded seeing her inner conflict played out in front of me.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemies, thinking someone can change, or wanting to believe a person's words instead of actions and evidence. I would never want to change being an optimistic person or trying to love on others no matter their past or faults, but there are also times to let go and know when someone is not good and won't change. Time to cut the cord that is pulling you down with them.

She's said repeatedly "if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have made that final step, I prayed to God this morning to show me how to let go, and you were here. It gives me that much more hope and faith knowing you went through the exact same things and how happy you are now, just shows you did go through those things for a reason. Without you I wouldn't have been able to do it..."

That was a pretty awesome moment, and at that moment I was happy for all the things bad and good I've experienced, that I could help someone older than me going through the hardest point in her life.

So keep your head up, keep fighting, one day you'll look back and see that was the worst and best thing to happen to you, but worth every moment to be as happy as you are now, and to be able to help someone else. Everything happens for a reason, it must have become cliche and used for a reason right?

So my test has been pushed back to October so I am able to have a life again (at least for a little bit!)  Thank goodness because this weather is too gorgeous to not enjoy.  That being said the last couple weeks have been great:

1. Went on my third ever snowboarding adventure.  Slowly getting better, working on my toe-side and trying to lean forward instead of back like I do wakeboarding.  Used to being on the water since birth so it's an adjustment when I get on the snow since everything is backwards.  So fun though and lucky got to celebrate Sonia's 40th birthday with her.  PS West Virginia roads are scary... anyone hear the banjos in the distance? Good thing C-rad is an expert driver and a bad @$$ in jiujitsu. :P  Maybe one day I will be going down the trick course with everyone else.  Below is the sunset one night from the condo.

2.  Mountain Biking.  I bought clip-in shoes and got back out on an EASSYYY single-track trail, Lake Crabtree.  It was a lot more fun, still fell a few times and got some scraps and bruises, but it was a lot better than going on 286 my first time ever.  The clips are still an adjustment though.  Here's a picture of  Crabtree trail (not me)..

3. Birthdays & V-day:  All around the beginning of February is Birthdays galore, my brother-in-law's, my dad's then mine (TOMORROW!!)  Also mixed up in there is Valentine's, which I usually forget about until I see flowers everywhere.  This year was one of the best V-days ever I was really surprised C cooked the best dinner ever complete with strawberries and hot fudge and 3 orchids.  Beautiful, unique flowers, and each one requires different care.  I'm trying my hand at having a green thumb, maybe I can get some of C's green thumb rubbed off on me.   Flowers are a lot better when they are living and I like learning about the flower and taking care of it! (hopefully it likes me taking care of it)  I have named it Orchikawa (it is a Bak. Samurai Warrior after all).  Below is my beautiful new baby.

GOALS for the next 3 months...

  1. Triathlon Shape- going to complete some more Olympic distances and try for Half-Ironman at end of the season.
  2. Attempt Mountain Biking again (this time not letting my expert mountain biker take me on a trail that's easy for him)
  3. Study for the PE Exam.  If you don't know what the PE Exam is I basically need to become a Chemical Engineering nerd again.  Breakdown of exam below. AHHH
